Urinary and Reproductive Systems

2016-2017 Urology USNews and World Report badge

A pediatric urologist is someone who specializes in the treatment of children and young adults who have problems involving the kidney, bladder, urethra, and reproductive organs (ovaries, uterus, vagina, testicles, and penis). University of Iowa Children’s Hospital is home to Iowa’s only board specialty certified pediatric urologists. Unlike adults, children are still growing and it’s important that they are seen by someone with extensive knowledge and training in children’s care. Our pediatric urologists have undergone two years of additional pediatric urology training following their general urology residency.

All children receive care from a team that includes not only pediatric urologists and pediatricians, but also nurses, pediatric radiologists, child life specialists, and other health care professionals who specialize in treating children.

Our team is specially trained to treat children and young adults with conditions such as:

  • Daytime wetting or voiding dysfunction
  • Bedwetting
  • Hydrocele or hernia
  • Hypospadias
  • Neurogenic bladder
  • Undescended testicle (cryptorchidism)
  • Urinary tract infections
  • Prune belly syndrome
  • Vesicoureteral reflux

Treatments, tests or procedures we offer include:

  • Behavior modification
  • Medication
  • Minimally invasive (robotic) urological surgery
  • Renal ultrasound
  • Surgical correction
  • Urethral catheterization

The Pediatric Urology Clinic recognizes the special needs of young patients and their families. We understand the sensitive nature of these conditions and treatments, so it is our goal to provide a comfortable environment for both you and your child. Our team offers a welcoming atmosphere while providing special expertise to give you and your family an accurate diagnosis and solution.

Our pediatric urologists specialize in the care of infants, children and adolescents. We also collaborate with obstetricians to provide diagnoses and care plans for genitourinary issues of the fetus. Our pediatric urologists have all completed a urology residency of five to six years, as well as two years of intensive pediatric urology fellowship training. Each of our staff has also achieved special certification in pediatric urology from the American Board of Urology.

Our urology services are available for patients and families at Iowa River Landing. Located at the Coralville interchange on Interstate 80 (exit 242), Iowa River Landing offers patients easy access, free parking, several amenities, and a state-of-the-art building for delivering outstanding patient care.

Those curious about the process of giving a pediatric patient a catheter can consult this video, which explains the process of minimizing trauma of pediatric urethral catheterization using lidocaine gel.
