Covenant Medical Center, UI Health Care bring advanced neonatal, high-risk OB and pediatric care to Waterloo

Covenant Medical Center and University of Iowa Health Care have announced a new relationship that will bring enhanced care to Waterloo for newborn babies, women with high-risk pregnancies and children.

Advanced Neonatal Care

The neonatal team at Covenant Medical Center has been joined by University of Iowa Children’s Hospital neonatologists and nurse practitioners who will provide on-site patient care at Covenant’s Neonatal Intensive Care Unit (NICU). This partnership ensures access to Iowa’s highest-level neonatal experts, working side-by-side with Covenant’s established and experienced NICU team, immediately at birth.

Neonatology refers to the care of premature infants or newborns who are seriously ill due to low birth weight or other life-threatening conditions. Covenant’s Level II Regional Center is adjacent to the Family Birth Center and offers a family-centered approach. UI Children’s Hospital is home to a Level 4 NICU—the highest level recognized nationally by the American Academy of Pediatrics—with outcomes among the very best in the nation for premature infants.

“One of our top priorities is to keep the babies we care for, and their families, as close to home as possible,” said Dr. Andrew Barden, Covenant Clinic Neonatologist and Medical Director of the Covenant NICU. “Our new collaboration with UI Children’s Hospital specialists will help us do this. But, in cases when we cannot keep a baby in our NICU, we have two advantages: first, an already established neonatal transport team to support the transport of babies in emergency situations when they need additional care; second, our connection to UI Children’s Hospital providers will ensure continuity of care in instances where a baby needs more advanced care.”

High-Risk Obstetrics Care

UI maternal-fetal medicine experts will also provide specialized, prenatal obstetrics (OB) care for women with high-risk pregnancies due to advanced maternal age; multiple births; chronic conditions such as diabetes, high blood pressure, or epilepsy; or a history of complications of pregnancy. Expectant mothers will be able to see UI Health Care specialists face-to-face in a convenient location at Covenant on the fourth floor of the Outpatient and Women’s Center.

Pediatric Specialty Care

Additionally, a UI Children’s Hospital pediatric specialty clinic will provide specialized care and consultations on the Covenant campus in the Covenant Clinic Pediatric office, located in Suite 510 of the Covenant Professional Office Building.

“Providing specialized health care close to home will benefit area families in a variety of ways, including improved access and less stress from travel,” said Jean Robillard, MD, UI Vice President for Medical Affairs. “This relationship will provide advanced care close to home while families continue to receive care from their own trusted providers. We are pleased to be working with the Covenant team and serving patients and families as part of this new endeavor."

“We have experienced positive results and feedback surrounding this new partnership,” said Teresa Horak, Director of Maternal Child Services. “We look forward to building this relationship as time progresses, in an effort to further enhance the high level of care we already strive to provide to the babies we care for.”
